1. The Get Up Kids
2. Saves the Day
3. Brand New
4. Joy Division
5. Glassjaw
What was the first song you ever heard by 1?
I would have to say either “Coming Clean” , “Fall Semester,” or “No Love.” Four Minute Mile was the first Get Up Kids album I ever got into (I wanna say spring of 2009) and as far as I remember, those three songs that I mentioned happened to be one of the first song(s) that I’ve ever listened to by the Get Up Kids.
What is your favorite song of 5?
Oh man there are too many Glassjaw songs that I love. It’s basically a tie between: Siberian Kiss, When One Eight Becomes Two Zeros, and You Think You’re John Fucking Lennon.
What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
I remember discovering The Get Up Kids around spring of 2009, when I was a junior in high school (see question 1). It wasn’t until the summer of that same year (before I became a senior in high school), my perspective on life pretty much changed. Socially I started to come out of my shell a little bit and I got my driver’s license. That was pretty huge for the time being. But one event in particular that helped me gain a positive outlook on life was when I met this girl and I was “held over heels” for (for the time being. long story short, we eventually dated for like 2 months or so, but that’s a story for another day). The reason why a band like The Get Up Kids had a huge impact on me is not only because I consider them to be one of my “all time favorite bands,” they were a band that I pretty much became obsessed with (along with other bands like Jawbreaker, Texas is the Reason, Descedents etc.) when I experienced this outburst of positivity and to some extent felt more hopeful and optimistic about things. Even though I was young and still learning to grow socially, those are memories I’ll hold onto forever and I think I’ll always associate The Get Up Kids with that time of my life.
What are your favorite lyrics of 5?
I would have to say the lyrics for the song, “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence.” Just because this was a song I seemed to listen to a lot on whenever I’m in a weird, yet sort of numbingly depressed kind of state. Also just because these are lyrics that kind of stand out to me the most in terms of any song by Glassjaw.
In the sun
I’ve got this for you
it’s under my finger nails.
I brought this for you.
It’s typically Sunday.
I’m digging a hole.
I’ll shut out the world.
This is what its like to be alone.
How many times have you seen 4 live?
Welp, Joy Division hasn’t been a band since 1980 due to Ian Curtis’ suicide so I’m going to have to say 0 for this answer :( It would be cool to see New Order if they’re still around if that counts for anything.
What is your favorite song by 2?
Ooof…man there are so many to choose from I have soooooooo many favorite Saves the Day songs. I think if I would to choose, there would be a definite tie between: Firefly and Sell My Old Clothes I’m off to Heaven.
Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
I can’t really recall any memories of me being sad whenever I’d listen to Brand New. “The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot” is the only song I can think of that would make me sad if I were listen to it, but then again, that’s if I were to be in the worst possible mood ever.
What is your favorite song by 1?
As of late, the songs “Action and Action” and “Valentine” have been my favorite songs by The Get Up Kids. Action and Action brings back memories of the when I saw them in the summer with Saves the Day. That was pretty much the best day of my life. And Valentine is a really cool and mellow song I always enjoy listening to on long car rides home or if I have a lot on my mind.
How did you first get into 2?
I wanna say it was the summer before my junior year of high school. Sometime when I was a freshman, I started getting into Lifetime, so it was pretty evident that I was going to listen to Saves the Day at some point later on. Back when limewire was still cool, I ended up downloading Can’t Slow Down, “Sell My Old Clothes I’m Off to Heaven,” “At Your Funeral,” and a couple songs off Through Being Cool. From there I was more into their “older stuff” and not until recently started to get into albums that were completely different from their pop punk roots like Sound the Alarm, In Reverie, etc. Regardless of what kind of album they put out, Saves the Day will always be one of my favorite bands. Seeing them live is always such a blast, and their newest album Daybreak is such a phenomenal and catchy album.
When did you get into 3?
I started getting into Brand New towards the end of my junior year of high school. My sophomore year of high school marked a “transitional period” for me in terms of my taste in music in which i was less into metalcore and started to slowly focus more into hardcore and punk. Junior year I had a lot of friends who were into bands like Say Anything, The Smiths, Bayside, Cursive etc. and I pretty much started expanding my musical horizons into bands that would have been considered to be “out of my comfort zone” if I heard about them a year or two prior. Brand New happened to be a band that I was interested in listening to at the time because they were one of those bands that I’ve heard of for the longest time, but I never gave them the chance or just kind of overlooked them. I started to listen to albums like Deja Entendu and You’re Favorite Weapon as any beginner Brand New fanatic would listen to at first I suppose. I’m pretty sure I just ended up downloading all of the albums immediately afterwards (this was a few months before Daisy came out and they released “At The Bottom” as a single if I remember correctly). The rest is pretty much self explanatory in comparison to how I first go into the other bands I mentioned on this list
What is your favorite song by 4?
“Love Will Tear Us Apart” for obvious reasons is one of my favorite Joy Division songs. Another song that is definitely my favorite is “Disorder.” Just because it has a sort of punk-ish new wave type feel to it. Unknown Pleasures is my favorite Joy Division album by far so “Disorder” is a song that definitely sticks out to me.
What is a good memory concerning 2?
I would definitely have to say seeing Saves the Day play with The Get Up Kids this past summer (see question 3). Seeing both two of my favorite bands share the stage together was a pretty surreal moment for me. I went the show with two of my best friends and I had a blast. I was two-stepping and screaming along the words to every song. The only bummer about that show was during The Get Up Kids’ set, I lost my glasses, and ended up finding them on the concert floor all bent up and broken. I didn’t let that ruin my time at the show and ended up still enjoying myself. That show is up there as one the top show I’ve ever been to of all time. My friends basically told me “that it was the happiest I’ve ever been in a really long time.” And I have to agree with them.
Is there a song by 2 that makes you sad?
“Undress Me” off their new album Daybreak is definitely a tearjerker. Let me tell ya, this cuts straight through the heart. Beautiful and emotional music at its finest.
What is your favorite song of 3?
“Last Chance to Lose Your Keys” is up there since I feel like I relate to the lyrics:
It’s girls like you that make my think I’m better
off at home on a Saturday night with all my doors locked up tight.
I won’t be thinking about you baby.
..whenever I find myself in self-loathing and predictable situations involving my luck with girls. Some other songs by Brand New that I really like are: Moshi Moshi, Degausser, and Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t.
